What Is a Pika?

A pika (say it like 'PIE-kuh') is a small, round, furry animal that looks a bit like a hamster with no tail. But it is actually a close cousin of rabbits!

Pikas live high up in cold, rocky mountains. They are about as big as your hand, and they are very good at hiding among the stones.

Why 'Screaming'?

This new pika got its fun nickname because of the loud calls it makes. For such a tiny animal, it has a surprisingly big voice that echoes across the rocks.

Pikas use their calls to talk to each other. The sounds can warn friends that danger is near, or tell other pikas to stay out of their home patch.

How Do Scientists Find New Animals?

Scientists travel to faraway places like tall mountains, deep forests, and even the bottom of the sea to look for animals nobody has studied before.

To name a brand-new species, they carefully compare it to known animals. They look at its body, listen to its sounds, and sometimes study tiny clues in its cells. This makes sure it really is something new.

Other Cool Discoveries in 2025

The screaming pika was not the only exciting find. Each year, scientists name hundreds of new species, from glowing sea creatures to colorful frogs and sneaky insects.

Every new animal helps us understand our planet better. It reminds us that Earth is full of surprises, even in places we think we already know.

Why It Matters

When we discover an animal, we can also learn how to protect it and its home. Many mountain animals like pikas are sensitive to a warming world, so keeping their cold homes safe is important.

Finding new creatures shows there is still so much left to explore. Maybe one day a kid like you will discover the next amazing animal!
