A Surprising Discovery
Scientists have found a dinosaur called Spicomellus (say it: SPY-co-MEL-us). It lived about 165 million years ago, during a time called the Middle Jurassic. That makes it the oldest armored dinosaur, or ankylosaur, ever found!
Its bones were dug up in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, a country in northern Africa. Finding it there is a big deal because most fossils of armored dinosaurs come from much later in dinosaur history.
What Are Armored Dinosaurs?
Ankylosaurs were plant-eating dinosaurs covered in bony armor, a bit like a walking tank. Their armor protected them from hungry meat-eaters, the way a turtle's shell protects a turtle.
Most ankylosaurs we know about lived tens of millions of years after Spicomellus. So this little dinosaur shows that armored dinosaurs got their start much earlier than scientists once thought.
Spikes Like Nothing Alive Today
Spicomellus had truly amazing armor. Some of its spikes grew straight out of its bones — something never seen in any other animal, living or extinct. Imagine spikes attached right to your skeleton!
It also had long spikes around its neck, with the longest measuring about 87 centimetres. That is almost as long as a baseball bat. It may even have had spikes near its tail, too.
Why It Matters
The first piece of Spicomellus was found years ago, but new digging uncovered much more of the skeleton. That gave scientists a far better picture of this strange, spiky animal.
Because it is so old and so unusual, Spicomellus helps experts understand how armored dinosaurs first appeared and how their wild spikes and armor changed over millions of years.
A Window into the Past
Every fossil is like a clue in a giant mystery about life long ago. Spicomellus reminds us that there are still huge surprises buried in the ground, waiting to be found.
